THE LEGEND OF MULAN
WHY IS THIS PLAY BEST FOR YOUR SCHOOL?

Mulan play for Kids to Perform Dragon in Mulan Play Young Performers in Aladdin Play
GameKids Playdance and Hawaii PAAM, Hawaii - Fish Hoek Primay School, Cape Town SA

Written especially for young people to perform.
While you may find large cast plays from other publishers, most of those were originally written for adults or professional actors to perform. They often contain difficult dialogue, unfamiliar or complex language, and speeches too long for young children to memorize. They may even contain jokes, innuendos and subject matter that may not be appropriate for children.

Easy to understand and memorize.
Dialogue is simple, fresh, quick and humorous, keeping the action flowing without stops and starts between scenes. This keeps young people and young audiences engaged throughout the performance - no awkward pauses, no dead-time, no wiggles!

Everyone participates.
All children are involved throughout the performance. This builds confidence, promotes team spirit and eliminates rehearsal rowdiness. The audience is often asked to join in the fun, and action often spills into the aisles! All of our SCHOOL PLAYS give suggestions on how to divide up large parts (such as Mulan) among several performers so that no one child is the "star".

Familiar stories with upbeat endings.
The story line stays as close as possible to the familiar story the kids already know.  While some authors feel the need to "improve" the story, our SCHOOL PLAYS stay as close to the familiar narrative as possible, making it easier for children - and your audience - to understand.

Feel free to edit!  Go ahead and tape it!
Most publishers insist that no changes may be made to their scripts.  We know that your goal is to engage every child in the most meaningful way and that your needs are unique.  Cut, eliminate, re-assign lines, or add as much as you like!  Also, there are no restrictions on video tapes.  Parents want a tape or DVD to remember their child's big moment.   Go ahead and tape away!

THE LEGEND OF MULAN
A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT

The Legend of Mulan inspires us all with a grand desire to be the best we can be: honest, tenacious and brave.  She leads us on an epic journey over mountains and rivers -- through the hills and valleys of fear and courage and human emotion.  Mulan knows it doesn't matter if she is a boy or a girl.  She just wants to make her mark, prove her mettle, and leave the world a better place.

I often call theatre daydreaming in motion.  To me, children's theatre is a magic place where we can step into a character's body and soul and walk around in there, learning what it feels like to be someone very different from ourselves.  It's a place where you let your mind go a little bit free and just lazily consider what life is like in a very different world.  The best part is that all these people (cast and audience) show up and join you in the fun!

Since theatre is really an organized daydream, we need to free ourselves from constraints and worries.  There is no right or wrong to this play date.  It is not important that you put on a great show.  What matters is the process and the connection the kids in your cast make with each other and their audience. All of these folks are your friends and they are there to support you and be a part of this wonderful experience.

I hope you'll embrace all the opportunities that Mulan presents to us.  I love her because she proves herself to be a true hero.  She had the courage to attempt the impossible and win!   I feel certain you will enjoy a little bit of Mulan's triumph and exhilaration when your kids are at the peak of this exciting adventure.

So take Mulan's hand and join her and the dragon -- flying away on the Chinese winds, over the vast landscape of possibilities!  Have a wonderful journey!

THE LEGEND OF MULAN
SCRIPT SAMPLE

Ancestors (storytellers) introduce us to Mulan and the Fa family as the winds of war begin to blow.
(Script pages 11-15)

"To the east of the palace ran a golden river."
The Legend of Mulan Storytellers in Mulan
ArtReach's The Legend of Mulan - PS 295, Brooklyn, NY

MEY:  To the east of the Palace ran a golden river...

QUAN:  And just beyond the hills in a gentle green valley...

TONG:  ...Lived the Fa family.  Father, mother, grandmother, big sister...

(MULAN enters, running, waving a make-shift wooden play sword, triumphantly, calling over her shoulder.)

    MULAN:  Ha-ha.  You lose again!

    ZEE:  ...And Little Brother.

(LITTLE BROTHER enters, dragging his sword.   His is shiny and metal.  ANCESTORS move out of the scene up to the pagoda.)

LITTLE BROTHER:  That's only because your sword is lighter than mine!  I could
win too if I didn't have to lug this big metal thing around.  Look!  I can hardly lift it.

MULAN:  Yours is father's best!  I'll be happy to switch with you if you like.

    LITTLE BROTHER:  Ha-ha.  That's a funny joke.

MULAN:  Why not?  I'm much better at sword fighting than you are.  Why
shouldn't I have the best sword?

LITTLE BROTHER:  Because you are just a girl.  Swords are for men.

MULAN:  Seems to me swords are for the ones who know how to use them.

LITTLE BROTHER:  Well even if I wanted to switch swords with you, no one
would let me.  I have to grow up to be a soldier.  And you... you...

MULAN:  I know.  I have to grow up and be a wife. (She slumps down on a bench.)
Little Brother, do you ever think the gods got it all wrong?

LITTLE BROTHER:  Of course not.  The gods are always right.  The gods are in...

MULAN & LITTLE BROTHER:  ...Harmony with nature.

MULAN:  I know, I know.  But did you ever think maybe nature could use a little
    "mixing it up"?

    LITTLE BROTHER:  Mixing it up?

MULAN:  What if things were different?  What if the sky was green and the grass
was blue?  What if fish flew and birds swam?

LITTLE BROTHER:  Yeah, yeah.  And maybe the cow will jump over the moon.

MULAN:  (Dreamy.)  What if girls could grow up to be anything they want?

LITTLE BROTHER:  The world would explode that's what.  You know what father
says.  Everything has a yin and a yang.

MULAN:  You mean like this?  (Jumps up with sword, posing for a fight.)  Yin!

LITTLE BROTHER:  (Crossing swords with her.)  Yang!

    MULAN:  Yin!

    LITTLE BROTHER:  Yang!

(They bang swords against each other calling out "yin" and "yang" as they hit until MULAN has him on the ground on his back, playfully holding her sword high over LITTLE BROTHER when FATHER enters.  We can see that he has difficulty walking.)

FATHER:  Hey, hey!  What is going on here?

    (MOTHER and GRANDMOTHER enter.)

MULAN:   Ho-ho, father!  I beat him again!

FATHER:  Mulan.  You know better than that.

    (MULAN helping LITTLE BROTHER up.)

MULAN:  Father, I am teaching him.  He needs to know how to protect himself.

FATHER:  (Not harsh.)  And you need to learn your place in the world, Mulan.
You must act like a lady.

MULAN:  Oh, that.  I tried to act like a lady today when I went to see the
matchmaker.  She told me I was hopeless.

FATHER:  And whose fault is that?

MULAN:  Father, I'm very good at some things!  Like sword fighting and
    horseback riding...

    FATHER:  I see.

(FATHER exchanges meaningful look to MOTHER and GRANDMOTHER who bow their heads in agreement.)

MULAN:  And I can shoot an arrow better than any boy in the village!

FATHER:  And modesty?  How are you doing in that department?

(MULAN sees MOTHER and GRANDMOTHER with heads bowed.)

MULAN:  (Lowering her eyes.)  I shall learn to be modest in all things, father.

FATHER:  That's better.  Now it is time to prepare tea.  Run along and help your
    mother and grandmother.

LITTLE BROTHER:  Yes, Mulan.  Run along and make tea.

(FATHER gives him a reproachful look.)

I mean.  Thank you for teaching me today, Mulan.  I shall do better tomorrow.

(LITTLE BROTHER exits.  MOTHER and GRANDMOTHER exit.  FATHER sees how sad MULAN is.  He lifts her chin.)

FATHER:  Mulan.  The butterfly must creep as a caterpillar before unfurling its wings.

MULAN:  But then it gets to fly, father!  How will I ever fly?

(FATHER picks up MULAN by the waist - or holds her by the waist as if lifting her - and "flies" her around the stage in playful fun.)

FATHER:  You will fly, you will fly!  (Laughing, he puts her down. He touches his
back since the exercise has given him pain.)  You will be what you want to be, Mulan.

MULAN:  Will I, father?  Will I?

    FATHER:  I promise.

(FATHER puts his arm around MULAN as they exit.

SOUND CUE #4:  Drums, winds of war, ominous WING music.  [Fade volume during dialogue].)  [sample]

BANG:  But the north winds were growing colder.

LI:  Black storms clashed in the sky!

MEY:  And even the Emperor did not know that war was soon upon them.

(WING enters from behind the audience.  ANCESTORS raise their arms about their faces as if in defense.)

    WING:  Wah-Raack!  Wah-Raack!

(Wings outstretched, WING flies down the aisle, fluttering long black wings over the audience's head and landing on stage.  WING flutters, pulsing in place as GENERAL LU BU enters, also from the aisle, with Huns SUN WU and YU FIE following.  SOUND CUE ENDS.)

GENERAL LU BU:  Now we are in place, men.  Our enemy trembles just beyond the ridge.  Here we will rest until the moment is right.
